Let’s be honest — not every human jumps at the idea of heading out in the pouring rain. (Some do, but they’re a special breed! 😄) Still, your dog needs exercise, mental stimulation, and a good sniff around the neighbourhood — no matter what the skies do.

“A daily walk isn’t just a luxury for a dog—it’s a need. No matter the weather, it’s their time to sniff, stretch, and stay balanced in body and mind.”

That’s why at Word of Woof™, we walk in all weather conditions unless it’s truly unsafe for your dog. Here’s how we keep every walk comfortable, enriching, and safe come sun, wind, frost or sideways rain.

☀️ Hot Days

On warm days, we take extra care to protect your dog from heat-related stress:

  • Walks are scheduled earlier or later where possible to avoid peak heat. We also choose shaded routes and ensure your dog has plenty of water.
  • Routes include shaded areas and green spaces.
  • Pavement is tested for heat — if it’s too hot for our hands, it’s too hot for our paws.
  • Water breaks are offered, and shorter walk options are available if needed.

Some dogs love the sun, but we’re always watching for signs of overheating — and adjusting pace accordingly. Barry is trained to spot early signs of heat stress as he is trained in dog first aid. We always encourage owners to ensure their dog is well-hydrated and wearing a well-fitted harness or collar before we arrive.

🌧️ Rainy Days

Rain doesn’t stop us — and it doesn’t stop many dogs, either. Some positively revel in puddle-hopping. But for those who’d rather stay under the duvet, we:

  • Keep towels on hand for a cosy rub-down after
  • Choose sheltered routes with trees or cover where possible
  • Offer shorter, more frequent walks with extra sniff time to make up for the dreariness

Barry also uses mini enrichment games when it’s truly stormy, so your dog still gets their brain exercised, even if the walk is brief. He also ensures your dog’s paws are clean and comfy before heading home — because no one likes muddy prints on the sofa!

Barry’s Top Tip: Keep a clean towel near your door for those rainy-day returns — your sofa (and your dog) will thank you!

❄️ Cold and Frosty Weather

Crisp walks can be magical — but frostbite, sore paws, and salt exposure aren’t. That’s why we:

  • Watch for signs your dog is getting too cold or stiff
  • Avoid over-salted roads where possible
  • Wipe paws post-walk to remove grit or ice
  • Adjust walk duration to suit age, breed, and coat type

Your dog’s safety and comfort always come first.

🌬️ Windy Walks

Strong winds can feel chaotic for some dogs. The whooshing and moving bushes are a sensory overload!

  • We keep walking slower and more reassuring for nervous pups
  • Let them sniff more — wind carries all kinds of new scents!
  • Stick to familiar areas if your dog’s a bit on edge.

Some dogs love the drama of a blustery day — and others need a little coaxing. Barry adjusts accordingly.

So… Do We Still Go Out?

Yes—unless it’s dangerous. We don’t cancel for a drizzle or a breeze because dogs need consistency, stimulation, and fresh air. But in extreme storms, perilous heat, or icy conditions, we’ll always prioritise your dog’s well-being and let you know.

We’ll towel them off, cheer them on, and give them a great experience — even if the weather’s having a tantrum. We know not everyone loves heading out in sideways rain or icy winds — and that’s precisely why we’re here: to take the pressure off, keep your dog happy, and let you stay warm and dry when the weather’s anything but inviting.
